Scorpions are here
Scorpions in Arizona are most active during the months of July and August, when temperatures are at their hottest. But as the weather cools down starting in October, they are more likely to come indoors to escape the cold nights. As winter sets in, scorpions tend to be less active, but they still seek indoor spaces at night.
Scorpions can fit through tiny gaps, so get any access points sealed in your home. Also, any items around your home exterior that you do not move regularly could attract scorpions. Clear debris around the exterior, such as wood piles, bricks, trash areas, and pine straw.
Scorpions are carnivorous predators who hunt at night. A basic idea for controlling scorpions is to control other insects on the property. Eliminating food sources goes a long way to eliminating scorpions.
Scorpion stings usually do not require any medical attention, and they are rarely serious. In fact, less than 5% of all scorpion stings result in a visit to a doctor. However, there are exceptions and occasionally a scorpion’s sting becomes serious. Of the many species of scorpions, the bark scorpion is the most dangerous one in the US.
The vast majority of scorpion stings are treated at home. Symptoms typically include redness and swelling at the site of the sting along with quite a bit of pain. Treatment typically means cleaning the area, applying ice or a cold compress for pain and swelling, elevating the area, applying an antihistamine cream, and taking an over-the-counter pain medication. Symptoms usually go away within 48 to 72 hours.
In a small percentage of cases symptoms can become more serious. These can include numbness, difficulty breathing or swallowing, slurred speech, seizures, muscle twitches, and others. If those symptoms begin it is important to seek medical attention. In severe cases the medical provider will treat the sting with antivenom. It is worth knowing that there have been no known fatalities in the US from a scorpion sting in over 50 years.
